Fans were left with a mother of a cliffhanger when the fourth season of The Walking Dead ended on Sunday night - but they've not had to wait to long for a sneak peek at what's to come.

Because the first poster teasing season five of the award-winning TV horror-drama was released today and gives a little hint of what's in store for Rick Grimes and the rest of the survivors.

The poster, released by network AMC which makes the show on its Facebook page, shows Rick, played by Andrew Lincoln, crouching on his own shrouded in beams of sunlight holding a gun.

And the single word 'Survive' hangs over his head suggesting this is the battle they will face after the season four finale left the survivors in a very precarious situation after they arrived at Terminus.

And if you've yet to watch the finale, it's probably best you stop reading now!

In the last episode, which aired in the US on Sunday night and the UK on Monday, Rick, Michonne, Daryl and Carl arrived at Terminus after escaping with their lives from a horrific attack.

Now cautious of any new situation, Rick and the gang decide to approach Terminus through the back but are welcomed with open arms.

However, as the former sheriff starts to notice that members of this new community are wearing items of clothes belonging to Glenn and Maggie - who were seen arriving there in the previous episode - he launches an attack.

They run through the compound as gunfire rains down by their feet but are eventually stopped and forced inside an old train carriage - where they are reunited with Maggie, Glenn and survivors they have picked up en route - but for how long.

Season five of the show airs this October.
