WASHINGTON (AP) — Once this year's harsh weather has faded, the U.S. economy could be poised for a breakout year — its strongest annual growth in nearly a
decade.
The combination of an improving job market, pent-up consumer demand, less drag from U.S. government policies and a brighter global outlook is boosting
optimism for the rest of 2014.
Many analysts foresee the economy growing 3 percent for the year, after a weak first quarter that followed a stronger end of 2013. It would be the most
robust expansion for any year since 2005, two years before the Great Recession began.
One reason for the optimism: The government estimated Thursday that the economy grew at a 2.6 percent annual rate in the October-December quarter, up from
its previous estimate of 2.4 percent. Fueling the gain was the fastest consumer spending for any quarter in the past three years.
The numbers pointed to momentum entering 2014 from consumers, whose spending drives about 70 percent of the economy.
Analysts cautioned that the brutal winter weather has depressed spending in the January-March. And they think economic growth has likely slowed to an annual
rate of 2 percent or less this quarter. Yet that slowdown could pave the way for a solid bounce-back in the April-June quarter. Many think growth will be
fast enough the rest of the year for the economy to grow at least 3 percent for all of 2014.
"We think that once temperatures return to more normal levels, we will see a lot of pent-up demand released," said Gus Faucher, senior economist at PNC
Financial Services. "People will be buying cars and homes and making other purchases that they put off during the winter."
Economists have suggested before that the recovery appeared on the verge of acceleration, only to have their expectations derailed by subpar growth that left
unemployment at painfully high levels.

According to the FBI, the agent ultimately made contact with Yee through an associate who helped Yee raise money, including for his failed 2011 San Francisco
mayoral campaign. Yee allegedly agreed to trade favors in Sacramento for campaign contributions made by UCE 4599 - as well as agents UCE 4773 and UCE 4180.
It was also UCE 4599 who reported engaging in a gun-trafficking deal with Yee, again while offering campaign funds.
"Senator Yee told UCE 4599 he saw their relationship as tremendously beneficial," Pascua wrote in his affidavit.
Yee, he said, promised to name the agent to a Russian delegation upon winning the election for secretary of state.

"The people they go after are the children and the little gray-haired old ladies, not gays," responds W. Gerald Weeks, the pastor of First Lutheran Church.
Phelps has targeted Weeks's church, Weeks says, because he mistakenly believes First Lutheran permits same-sex marriages and gay ministers.
Phelps denies that his groups' attacks get violent or even profane. But his denial is belied by a videotape made byPhelps's own people. It is expected to be
used as evidence in an upcoming trial.
Scene: the lawn of First Lutheran Church on a sunny Sunday morning, Labor Day weekend 1993. The mellifluous voices of the Phelps children and grandchildren
can be heard in the background, an angelic choir, as the camera centers on the determined face of Rev. Weeks, already suited up for the day's worship service
in his ministerial garb. He is holding a small hammer in his hand, driving a sign into the grass that reads "God's Love Speaks Loudest."
A finger points in his face and words are exchanged. Weeks, visibly angered, makes a disgusted downward swipe with the small tool, directed at no one in
particular.The hammer head falls off and onto the ground, rolling about. The picketers dissolve in shrieks of protest, accusing Weeks of hitting them.
"You're a violent, evil man!" screams lawyer Margie J.Phelps, one of Fred's daughters. Four people wrestle Weeks to the ground, sitting on him, pinning an
arm behind his back and holding his face in the dirt, claiming they are making a "citizen's arrest." After horrified parishioners implore the picketers to
release Weeks, he sits up, looking woozy, his gray hair mussed and his eyes unfocused. In the background, Margie Phelps's voice can be heard: "We will have
our theology and we won't be attacked because of it. You keep that wild man under control."
Eventually, two of Phelps's sons -- Jonathan, a 300-pounder, and Timothy -- along with two other Westboro Baptist Church members, were charged with battery
and unlawful restraint. Margie Phelps was charged with filing a false police report. The trial is scheduled for later this year.

John Calvin and every other church leader and I can prove it to you. Even if it was perverted, that's not for you to say, chief. That's none of your
business, my friend."
Having said his piece, Phelps hangs up.
"You have to educate these people," he mutters.

Many of the ministers whose churches have been targeted by Phelps believe that he and his family have intimidated some local officials into docility. Because
Phelps is such an ugly enemy, because of his propensity to sue, and because there is no significant political mileage in being perceived as pro-gay, the
churchmen say officials have sometimes been guilty of looking the other way in all but the most egregious cases of harassment.
"That's ridiculous," responds Beavers. "Fred is always mad at me, so I figure I must be doing something right."
(It is true that Fred is angry with nearly everyone. He calls Mayor Felker "the Antichrist.")
Beavers says his officers struggle to maintain the delicate line between Phelps's right to free speech and Topekans' right to worship and carry on their
lives without harassment. But ministers like Bob Layne, the rector at St. David's Episcopal Church, say their congregations have been repeatedly harassed and
that the Topeka police, acting on orders of the conservative mayor, have done nothing.
At first, Layne says, "we tried to win them over with some degree of Christian love, ask them in for coffee, and they would swear we had AIDS." So the church
decided to fight fire with their own brimstone. For 18 months -- until last August, when the church obtained a temporary restraining order limiting the
Phelpses' picketing activities on its property -- members of the congregation would stand outside, holding their own signs advocating love and tolerance,
next to the Phelpses' each day before services.
"I would come in shaking sometimes," says Layne. "To be told you drink anal blood at the altar of the sphincter'? They had little kids shouting outside in
the rain and the cold, Rectum Bob, smells like his name.' "

Senate Democrats' supermajority could be

Any constitutional amendment would pass only if Republicans were given a seat at the negotiating table.
The legislative process is healthier without a supermajority, said Peter DeMarco, a spokesman for the Senate Republican Caucus.

disclosure requirements if they kicked in next year rather than in this election year.
But "the majority party refused so they could turn this into another cheap political stunt," Huff said.
A 2014 effective date would mean that donors "do not have time to understand that the rules of engagement have changed," he said.
The bill's author, Sen. Lou Correa (D-Santa Ana), wanted more disclosure in time for this year's elections and could bring the proposal, SB 27, back for
another vote before the session ends Aug. 31.
The lack of a supermajority also loomed in the decision to shelve a proposed constitutional amendment to overturn the state's ban on affirmative action at
colleges and universities.
The measure, by state Sen. Ed Hernandez (D-West Covina), passed the Senate in January, when it had a Democratic supermajority.
But the effort to change the Constitution, which bans consideration of race, sex or ethnicity in hiring and admissions decisions, has attracted an
increasingly vocal backlash in recent weeks. Some Chinese Americans, for example, have worried that their children may lose admission spots to other students
from underrepresented racial or ethnic groups.
If the measure is amended in the Assembly to address their concerns, it would go back to the Senate and again need a two-thirds vote to pass. But Republicans
in the upper house now have the ability to block such legislation.
Legislative leaders announced Monday that they would delay consideration of the measure and convene a task force of academics and lawmakers to study minority
representation.

He probably paid and then you went home to your lovely house and had some nice sex and almost certainly a little spoon afterwards, all content in your smug, coupley existence.
Well, I had no such luck.
I spent Valentine’s Day parked in my own driveway in yesterday’s knickers.
So whatever stories you might have heard of Valentine’s Day ‘disasters’ pas, I believe this will trump them ) all (And this will end up being an entirely relevant turn of phrase, if you care to read on.)
Yes, this really was the worst.
Even worse than the Valentine’s Day 2009 when I received a spice rack and a size six thong.

This was an experience that made me think that perhaps those people who seem to have turned up to clubs on their own probably just have devilishly attractive friends who pull before they even have time to order a drink.
